Returning Officers

The Election Commission appoints Returning Officers for conducting election after the announcement of the Election. One Returning Officer is appointed for each constituency for conducting election to the House of Representatives. In the district having more than one constituency a Chief Returning Officer is appointed to co-ordinate between Returning Officers. He also acts as a Returning Officer for one of the constituencies in the district. As per law judges and officers from Legal/Judicial services are appointed as Returning Officers. For local elections, the practice has been to appoint Chief District Officers as Returning Officers.
